New Zealand Customs Service – Auckland – Job Description Detector Dog Handlers are part of the Operations Support and sit within the Intelligence, Investigations and Enforcement Group, which is responsible for the investigation of offences under a range of legislation and provides operational risk response capability. The role involves responsibility for training a Detector Dog to identify and intercept items and goods that threaten community interests, as well as accountability for the dog’s welfare. The handler will work with their dog to safely search aircraft, people, ships, goods and premises, to detect, identify, and seize any prohibited items such as drugs & cash, in accordance with policy and instructions. In addition to making operational decisions regarding the best utilisation of their dog, the handler must be able to correctly identify, manage and modify canine behavioural issues.
